I'll be the judge of that.

Reality TV Report – Bachelor, Vanderpump, Housewives (Winter 2015-16)

It’s time to face reality.

The Bachelor (ABC)

1

This season of the most talked-about reality show on TV is off to a slow start. Following Kaitlyn Bristowe’s mostly unfortunate (albeit entertaining) season of anarchy and overblown slut-shaming, and not to mention the hellish emotional brutality of Bachelor in Paradise, ABC’s producers seem to have backpedaled and chosen a very safe option with niceguy Ben Higgins. Suicide Squad Trailer

BK: The latest trailer for Suicide Squad starts with all the promise in the world – “Bohemian Rapsody” is a great backing track and the visuals looks great.  The cast is already excellent (would have been even better if Tom Hardy was still on board) so there is nothing to worry about there. But once the opening few shots zip past, things start to go downhill. (more…)

Bachelor Bio Breakdown – Syvology Edition

Fam. Squad. HEY YOU GUUUYS! ( off to a topical start)

It’s BACHELOR season!

I realize I’m a week late, but we have a whole new cast of eligible and (generally) attractive “24 year-olds”*  whose two biggest fears in life are dying-alone and not getting enough nationally-televised attention, and we need to discuss. You and Me.

Let’s get right to the Bios! **

Ariana Grande – Christmas & Chill EP

ariana-christmas-and-chill

syvo: Well, well, well- Merry Christmas! This is a fantastic little surprise. This past week, we read that Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” was somehow unseated this year (by a stupid Shins cover of that stupid Paul McCartney song) as the most-played in-store holiday tune. Ariana, the Mariah faux-tégé that she is, must smell blood, since over the last few years she’s been steadily releasing her own Christmas tunes. (more…)

X-Men: Apocalypse Trailer

xmenapocalypse-storm-apocalypse-psylocke

BK: Including the Wolverine movies, this will be the 8th (!!?!) movie in the X-Men franchise and the quality of the movies has varied from bad (X-Men 3, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) to solid (X-Men, X-Men: First Class) to great (X2). They handed the reigns of the franchise back to director Bryan Singer who, despite the negative reputation of his Superman effort (Superman Returns is criminally underrated), has shown a remarkably deft touch with a potentially overcrowded and over complicated series. syvo: At long last, the antidote to my chronic, oppressive superhero fatigue. The last decade of big-budget superhero movies, primarily from Marvel, has left me emotionally spent, alienated from a geek subculture that I’d spent my teenage years and early twenties fully ensconsed in. It has been a depressing, cold world ever since Thor 2: The Dark World came out and exposed the shallow, repetitive enjoyment that Big Spandex has to offer us: just like sports, religion, pop music and two-party politics, Big Spandex is a kind of mass opiate that we’re not allowed to opt out of. Noé Love: Can Cinematic Storytelling and Pornography Coexist?

maxresdefault 1000x563 Noé Love: Can Cinematic Storytelling and Pornography Coexist?

“The fantasy ideal of a perfect work of pornography would be precisely to preserve this impossible harmony, the balance between narration and explicit depiction of the sexual act.” -Slavoj Žižek, Looking Awry

Over the past two years a series of films have attempted to blur the line between cinema and pornography. We’ve seen films like Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac (2013), Abdellatif Kechiche’s Blue is the Warmest Color (2013) and Alain Guiraudie’s Stranger by the Lake (2013), each notable for its supposedly groundbreaking visual treatment of sex in narrative cinema. The world has changed since I last reported. A fantastic season of Real Housewives of New York City is in the rearview. Real Housewives of Orange County is speeding towards conclusion with an ethically questionable (and superb) storyline concerning Brooks’s supposedly fake cancer. Meanwhile, Bachelor in Paradise closed a continuously breathtaking season with the worst on-screen breakup in human history, and I Am Cait has inexplicably been renewed for a second season.

But it is fall now, and we have new realities to confront: (more…)

Nicole Dollanganger’s Music Explores the Relationship Between Violence and Love

1 1000x750 Nicole Dollanganger’s Music Explores the Relationship Between Violence and Love

Last month, Grimes announced on her tumblr the launch of an artist co-operative called Eerie Organization. She also revealed its first artist: Canadian singer-songwriter Nicole Dollanganger. Clearly excited about this girl’s music, Grimes had this to say:

I cannot adequately describe it succinctly, but something like Hurt NIN sound design/ pain w Dolly Parton-esque witty profundity that sometimes gets super dark and contrasty to fluttery expressive cherub vocals. theres a smattering of Daniel Johnston vibes if that makes sense. but it also does lots of other things I’m not good at describing music. i hate comparing music to other music, you should just really listen to it.

As a person who is also not good at describing music and frequently tries to resist the impulse to merely compare music to other music (but does so all the time, and does it more below), I was instantly intrigued and took a trip to Nicole Dollanganger’s bandcamp to “just really listen to it.”  (more…)
